5 Cool Tips for Refrigerator Maintenance

0

Believe it or not, almost one hundred percent of American homes have a refrigerator, with twenty-three percent owning two or more. As it turns out, a refrigerator has quite literally become an appliance we can’t go without. However, like any household item, your refrigerator is liable to deteriorate if not properly cared for.

Is your refrigerator operating at its best? If not, you should remember that just because your refrigerator seems to be working fine doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be maintained. This brief guide will break down a few crucial refrigerator maintenance tips to incorporate into your routine.

1. Check Seals

Any time you shut your refrigerator, you should be able to feel the seals around the inside borders of the doors shutting completely. If the seal is uneven or obstructed at certain points, then the refrigerator’s cool air will leak out. This will cause your refrigerator to work harder to maintain its temperatures, wasting energy.

Part of any refrigerator maintenance routine should include cleaning the seals of your refrigerator’s doors to make sure they shut all the way.

2. Monitor Temperature

Just because your refrigerator is on and running doesn’t mean it’s maintaining the most efficient temperature.

Is your refrigerator running at an internal temperature between 37 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit? If not, you will need a refrigerator tune up to adjust the temperature until it falls within that range.

3. Clean Inside

Any given refrigerator will constantly have food items being packed inside them and pulled out in a hurry. Of course, much of these food items can be perishable or easily spilled to varying degrees.

An essential part of any fridge maintenance checklist should include a thorough cleaning every once in a while. During this process, you should remove all items from the inside of the fridge and wipe down every surface with safe cleaning products.

4. Keep Condenser Coils Clean: A Must for Refrigerator Maintenance

Part of your regular fridge servicing should include remembering to brush its condenser coils at least twice a year.

The function of these coils is to remove warmth from inside the refrigerator. To reach them, you will need to pull your refrigerator away from the wall, then brush and vacuum underneath.

5. Make Sure Nothing Blocks Vents

Inside your refrigerator, cool air is always flowing through the vents. If any bulky food items should block them, the air inside becomes stagnant, which then insufficiently cools all items inside.

When arranging items inside your refrigerator, always give the vents some clearance to ensure they have proper room to breathe.
