Bugged by Pests in Your Home? 5 Tips to Keep the Bugs Away

0

A study showed that most homes have at least 100 types of bugs living inside. While many of these critters are friendly, others can wreck havoc on your house and health.

From blood-hungry mosquitos to wood-eating termites, it’s important to prevent a bug infestation before it’s too late.

Read on for five essential pest control tips to keep creepy crawlers out of your space.

1. Clean House

Bugs love dirty, dusty homes. They can easily hide behind clutter, making safe spaces for their little bug families.

But your home should be for your family—not the bugs’. To keep bugs at bay, you should regularly (and thoroughly) clean your home.

Keeping your home clean is one of the best pieces of pest control advice. Dust, vacuum, and mop on a weekly basis, and throw trash out as often as you can. Make sure dishes are never left dirty, and remove all food scraps from your kitchen sink and counters.

Also make sure to keep bathrooms dry and mold-free. This will deter pests that thrive in moist environments.

2. Seal Cracks and Holes

One way to prevent a bug infestation is to block bugs’ entrances in your home.

Check your windows for any cracks or gaps. Similarly, look over spaces around doors. Any spots where you can feel a draft can likely let in bugs too.

It’s also a good idea to check for cracks on the outside of your home. Foundation cracks or holes in the roof can let bugs in, giving them easier access to your living space.

3. Throw Out Bug-Friendly Plants

Plants can help keep your air clean, but they could also invite some unwanted guests. And sometimes, the bugs that live in plants are too small to see with the naked eye.

Research the greenery you have in your home to find out if it attracts pests. In general, houseplants that require heavy watering are more likely to attract pests.

Meanwhile, other plants like lavender and lemongrass are known to repel certain bugs and insects.

4. Screen Your Windows

Aside from filling any cracks around your windows, it also helps to add a screen. This creates an additional barrier, making it hard for some bugs (especially larger pests like mosquitoes and cockroaches) to get in.

Install screens even on windows you never open. And if you already have screens, check that they’re free of any rips or cracks.

5. Get a Professional Inspection

If you already have a pest problem, or if you want to ensure you never do, it helps to contact the professionals.

Professional pest control services can inspect your home to find and eliminate hidden bugs. They can also find anything that could attract bug issues later.
