Driving 101: Car Laws to Know Before You Hit the Road

0

You’ve passed your driving test! Now it’s time to grab the keys and hit the road! Well, it’s almost time for you to hop in your car and drive off.

It’s important that you fully grasp the basic car laws first. We know you’re thinking, “that’s what the road test and months with a permit were for!”

There are still a few unspoken rules of the road that you should familiarize yourself with. Some of these laws vary from state to state. Some of them are issued on a federal level.

Either way, you need to know them. Check out this guide to learn more.

State Laws

There are two different sets of driving laws. There are state rules and federal rules. You’ll run into the federal ones no matter what state you’re in.

Penalties for breaking car accident laws and filing ford lemon law claims will vary depending on what state you’re in, however. You’ll need to familiarize yourself with them before you buy a car or drive for the first time.

Look Before You Reverse

Most cars have a backup camera. That doesn’t mean you should only rely on it when you’re reversing. Those cameras show you what’s directly behind you, but that’s it.

You won’t be able to see what’s to the right or left. So for the safety of yourself and everyone around you, always look before you throw your vehicle into reverse.

Slow Drivers Stay In the Right Lane

This is one of the many vehicle laws that not everyone knows. Slower drivers should stick to the right lane. If you find yourself lagging behind in the left lane, switch over.

If you stick to the left, you’ll cause some nasty traffic congestion. It could even result in an accident.

Yield to Pedestrians

Pedestrians have the right of way in every situation. If you see one, you’re required to yield in case the person is crossing the street.

If the pedestrian is about to cross over, stop and let them go by. You can continue on as normal as soon as the person gets to the other side of the road.

Move Over for Emergency Vehicles

You’re driving down the road when you hear a loud siren go off. That is an emergency vehicle speeding in your direction. You’ve got to pull over and let the driver get by.

Most driving instructors will fill you in on this little rule, but we’re going over it in case they didn’t. If you fail to pull over for that fire truck or ambulance, you could get hit with a hefty fine.

Car Laws to Remember

After you get your license or permit, you’re still not quite ready to hit the road yet. You’ve got to read up on all the car laws you can first.

Failing to do so could result in fines or jail time if you cause an accident. Keep yourself and everyone around you safe. For more tips that will make you into a responsible driver, visit the Automotive section of our blog.
