It’s recommended that you clean your house windows every 6 months. Are you keeping up with this schedule?
If you’re guilty of never cleaning house windows, then there’s no better time to start than today. Just make sure you have the right tools and knowledge for the job to make it go faster.
Don’t know how to clean house windows like a pro though? Then read on for a brief house window cleaning guide to make yours shine!
Washing Picture Windows
To start, you’ll want to get a strip applicator. Dunk it in a bucket of warm water mixed with a tiny bit of dishwashing soap.
You might think the more suds, the better, but the opposite’s true. You want to get as little suds as possible.
Drag the strip applicator over the picture window to eliminate dirt and debris.
Now you’ll need a squeegee to wipe everything clean. Take care to use a reverse-S pattern to minimize streaks and maximize dryness. With every stroke, wipe the squeegee clean/dry with a clean cloth.
If there are any tough spots, you can gently go over them with either fine 000 steel wool or Barkeeper’s Friend. You’ll need to go over the panes with the squeegee again afterward.
At the end, wipe the edges of the pane with a damp chamois cloth. Then wipe the windowsill dry with a clean cloth.
Washing Multipane Windows
Both a strip applicator and squeegee won’t fit on multipane windows since each pane is much smaller.
You’ll want to trim down a squeegee to fit the panes perfectly. Make sure to file down the edges to avoid injury. You should also leave the rubber blade slightly longer than the squeegee holder on both sides.
To clean the window panes, use either a hog-bristle brush or a sponge. Dip either one in a solution of warm water and dishwashing soap, then scrub the panes, starting from the top. Use some elbow grease if the panes are particularly dirty.
Then take your squeegee and wipe down each pane. You’ll want to drag it down in 1 stroke from top to bottom. Clean off the squeegee on a clean cloth between each wipe.
Like with picture windows, you should finish the cleaning by using a chamois cloth to wipe down the edges, as well as any streaks. Wipe the windowsill dry with a clean cloth.
If you accidentally break your window in the cleaning process, have a professional like Apex Windows come and replace it for you ASAP.
