How to Stop a Termite Infestation Before Pests Devour Your Home

0

Termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage every year in the United States. Not only will they eat through walls, but they’ll also feed on insulation, carpet fibers—anything that’s made of cellulose.

What’s worse, is that the damage is often not apparent until it’s too late. Given that, it’s important that you treat infestations as soon as possible.

Do you have a termite infested house? Looking for some tips on what to do? If so, you’re at the right place.

We’ll be going over some termite infestation treatment options below. Keep reading to learn more!

Set a Cardboard Trap

One way to get rid of termites is to create a cardboard trap. Spray two to three pieces of cardboard with water and pile them on top of each other to make a DIY bait.

The cellulose in the cardboard will attract the termites and they’ll get stuck between the wet pieces as they’re devouring them. Once the cardboard is infested, take it outside and burn it. Repeat several times, if necessary.

Keep in mind, however, that there’s no guarantee that it’ll trap all of the termites. Given that, it’s best to combine this method with another treatment.

Use Boric Acid

You can treat an infestation of termites with boric acid. If anything, it’s one of the most effective ways to get rid of them. In fact, it’s the main ingredient of many insecticides.

How does it work? By disrupting their stomachs and destroying their metabolism. Not only that, but it’ll abrade their exoskeletons as well.

And it’s super easy to use. All you have to do is spray the areas where termites are present. For example, you can spray it on termite infested wood such as walls, floors, and ceilings.

Use Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is a type of powder made from fossilized algae. While it feels like a soft powder to humans, it’s extremely toxic to insects—including termites.

If you were to look at the powder under a microscope, you’d see tons of tiny jagged edges. Ultimately, it’s these sharp edges that will kill the termites. They’ll slice open their exoskeletons, causing them to dry out and die.

In terms of what to do, simply sprinkle the powder around the infected areas and wait for the termites to crawl over it. You can also mix the powder with water and use it as a spray. Keep in mind, however, that it won’t be effective until the water dries.

Treating a Termite Infestation

Don’t wait if you have a termite infestation; you want to treat it as soon as possible even if that means trying out different treatment methods. Remember, the longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to deal with.
