If you’re focused on keeping fit this year, congratulations! Even if you didn’t make getting in shape a new year’s resolution, why not start now? There’s no better time than right now to get fit and develop good exercise habits.
And if you don’t feel great about the shape you’re in, don’t let that stop you. Everybody who’s fit and in shape had to start somewhere!
There are so many ways to get active, it’s possible to find an activity no matter what shape you’re in now. Here are five new sports to try this year to help you get and stay healthy.
- Cycling
Riding a bike is practical because you can use it to get places. And it’s fun because you can explore with a bike faster than you can on foot. Cycling is a low-impact way to keep fit, so it’s gentle on your joints. You can cycle outdoors or inside on a stationary bike.
- Martial Arts
Martial arts may seem intimidating, but you learn them one step at a time. So if you’ve always wanted to learn the art of self-defense, why not sign up for a class? You’ll learn martial arts etiquette and the basics before you do anything dramatic, so don’t worry.
There are so many types of martial arts, with different specialties. You can choose from TaeKwonDo, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, as you’ll learn at Kioto Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Kung Fu, Aikido, and more.
- Bowling
Bowling is almost as mental as it is physical- because you have to concentrate and count your score as you progress. Bowling also gets you moving and is relatively gentle.
You can play with a regular bowling ball, which can weigh up to sixteen pounds. Or, if you don’t want to pick up something so heavy, you can play duckpins, and bowl a ball that weighs about three pounds.
- Urban Hiking
Like to hike, but don’t live near a hiking trail? Don’t let this stop you from exploring! Walk around your city with your phone’s GPS, and you’ll notice details that you’ve always missed when passing by in a car.
If you really want to understand a city, walking is the best way to familiarize yourself with its landmarks. Take a pedometer and set a miles goal.
If you happen to be a football fan then walk to the Cotton Bowl Stadium and catch a game to enjoy yourself.
At the conclusion of your walk, treat yourself to a snack at your favorite- or brand new, to you- cafe. You can always combine your walking fitness routine with other hobbies, like photography or used book collecting.
- Skating
Think roller skating is for kids? Think again. Get yourself a pair of inline skates, and you’re well on your way to learning a low-impact, super fun sport. Many adult inline skaters started as skeptics but soon found skating to be their most regular exercise.
Be sure to buy the right protective padding for your joints, especially wrists and elbows. Once you get experienced enough, you could even use your skates to commute!
Keeping Fit is Easy When You Make It Fun!
There’s no need to stress out about keeping fit. As long as you find ways to have fun, you won’t even realize that you’re working out. You don’t have to hit the gym or force yourself to become a runner. Just try to incorporate more movement into your daily life, and have fun in the process.
